Every totals market gives you a choice you rarely think about. You can take 7.5 or you can take 8. The half run costs about fifteen to twenty cents of price and the standard explanation is that you are buying a run. You are not. On a whole number you are buying a refund, and the size of that refund is not a constant. It depends entirely on which whole number you bought.
This season the difference between the best whole number and the worst is nearly five points of outcome frequency, and the reason has nothing to do with pitching or parks. It is arithmetic parity. Baseball scores land on odd combined totals far more often than even ones, and every whole number total sits on either the good side of that or the bad side.

The sample is 2,058 games, every 2026 regular season final in the MLB Stats API from March 25 through August 30. No prices, no models, only final scores added together.

That is a 15.74 point gap on a coin flip that most people assume is a coin flip. It is not noise either. On 2,058 games the binomial standard error is 1.09 points, so the observed split sits about seven standard errors away from even.
The mechanical reason is that a baseball game cannot end level. Every final has a margin of at least one run, and a one run margin forces the two scores to have opposite parity, which always adds up to an odd number. Margins of one accounted for 27.16 percent of all 2,058 games this season, the single most common margin by a wide gap, and every one of those games returned an odd combined number.
Now put the parity gap onto the numbers a book actually posts. This is the share of games landing on each exact combined total, which is the push rate for a whole number total set there.

A whole number 7 refunds better than one ticket in nine. A whole number 10 refunds one in fifteen. Those are the same bet type, the same sport and the same season, and one of them is worth 71 percent more insurance than the other.
The practical version: if a book offers you 7 or 7.5 and the price gap is small, the whole number is doing far more work than it does at 10 or 11. Buying the half run down to a whole number is a good habit at the odd totals and close to a rounding error at the even ones above nine.
Take the number in front of us tonight. Boston and Seattle is 7.5 on the main market and 8 on the whole number.

Look at what the two half runs do and notice they do completely different jobs. Going from 7.5 to 8 wins you nothing extra. It converts 8.26 percent of your losses into refunds. Going from 8 to 8.5 converts that same 8.26 percent from refunds into wins. The first half run is insurance, the second half run is profit, and books very often price them at the same distance.
On decided games only, an under 8 is a 47.35 percent proposition at the league baseline, which is 43.44 divided by 43.44 plus 48.30. That is the number a price has to beat, and it explains why an under 8 is usually the cheaper side of the pair while an under 8.5 is not.
The league baseline is a starting point, not a play. The 2026 mean combined total is 8.93 runs, and a matchup only becomes an under when both starters and both offenses drag the projection well below that. When they do, the whole number is worth reaching for. When they do not, the extra eight percent of refunds is being bought on a bet that was going to lose anyway.
Two other things fall out of the same table. The distribution is right skewed, so totals above ten thin out quickly, which is why the market rarely posts a number above 11 and why overs on high numbers need blowouts rather than good hitting. And the odd parity effect is strongest exactly where the market lives, at 7 and 9, so the whole number habit pays best on the numbers you see most often.
How This Was Built
- Sample
- Every 2026 regular season game carrying a Final status in the MLB Stats API schedule endpoint from March 25 through August 30, 2026. That is 2,058 games. Nothing was excluded and no game was weighted.
- Combined total
- Away runs plus home runs from the final linescore. Games that went to extra innings are included at their final score with no adjustment.
- Push rate
- The count of games whose combined total equals exactly that whole number, divided by 2,058. This is the empirical push frequency for a total set on that number, before any price.
- Parity
- Odd or even on the combined total. The binomial standard error on 2,058 observations at a 50 percent base rate is 1.10 points.
- Margin
- Absolute difference between the two final scores. One run margins were 559 of 2,058 games.
- Decided rate
- Wins divided by wins plus losses, with pushes removed from the denominator entirely.
What is not checked, and cannot be:
- No prices anywhere. Every figure is an outcome frequency. An 8.26 percent push rate is worth a different amount of money at -105 than at -125 and none of that is measured here.
- One season. Parity splits are stable over long histories but 2,058 games is five months, and the 57.87 percent reading would need several seasons before it could be called a structural constant rather than this year's number.
- Park, weather and roster effects are ignored. A total of 8 in a pitcher's park in September is not the same bet as a total of 8 in a hitter's park in July, and this study does not separate them.
- The push rates are league wide. Any individual game has its own distribution and its own most likely total, and it can sit far from the league shape.
- Extra innings are included unadjusted. The automatic runner rule inflates the tail and pushes some games onto totals they would not have reached in nine.
- Nothing here says which side of a number to take. The study is about the shape of the number, not the direction.
