Two phrases get repeated every September and they contradict each other. One is the Super Bowl hangover: the team that just played in February comes out flat. The other is that a Super Bowl team is a Super Bowl team, and week 1 is when the gap between the good clubs and the rest is widest.

Both are testable. Take every club that reached a Super Bowl, find its first game the following September, and write down what happened.

The Method

Super Bowls for the 2009 season through the 2024 season, which is sixteen games and thirty two participants. For each one, that team's week 1 result the following regular season: opponent, venue, score, margin.

Thirty two games, no exclusions, no filtering for injuries or coaching changes.

The Headline Numbers
GroupGamesStraight upCovered +3.5Mean margin
All Super Bowl teams3220-12, 62.50 percent24, 75.00 percent+1.72
Super Bowl winners1611-5, 68.75 percent12, 75.00 percent+2.38
Super Bowl losers169-7, 56.25 percent12, 75.00 percent+1.06

The hangover story does not survive first contact. A team that reached the Super Bowl wins its next opener 62.50 percent of the time, and if the number in front of it were plus 3.5 it would have cashed in three quarters of these games.

But the mean margin is only +1.72, which is the number that tells you what these games actually look like. These are not blowouts. They are close games that the better team usually, narrowly, wins.

The Venue Split Is Not Random

Before reading the winners row as evidence about winners, read where they played.

Fifteen of the sixteen Super Bowl winners hosted their next opener. One travelled. That is not a sampling accident, it is the schedule: the league puts the defending champion at home on the Thursday night that starts the season, with the banner and the ceremony.

So the winners' 68.75 percent is a home number, and it should be read as one.

The losers are the group with an actual venue mix. Nine of sixteen went on the road.

That bottom row is the interesting one and it is the smallest sample on the page, so it gets both statements attached to it.

A Super Bowl loser opening on the road is 4-5 straight up with a mean margin of -1.44 and a median of -1. It is a coin flip that leans very slightly the wrong way. It is also nine games, which settles nothing on its own.

What These Games Look Like

Here are all thirty two margins in order, from the Super Bowl team's point of view:

-28, -22, -21, -15, -10, -7, -6, -4, -3, -3, -1, -1, +1, +2, +3, +4, +4, +5, +5, +6, +6, +6, +7, +7, +7, +7, +8, +13, +14, +20, +21, +30

Twenty two of the thirty two, which is 68.75 percent, were decided by 8 points or fewer. The middle of that list is a wall of ones through sevens. Five games finished at a margin of exactly 7, four at exactly 6, and three at exactly 3.

That clustering is the practical finding. A Super Bowl team's opener is a one score game more than two thirds of the time, which means the half points around 3 and 7 are doing more work in this spot than in an average NFL game.

How To Use It

One. Ignore the hangover. Twenty and twelve is the answer, and the mean margin is positive. Whatever fatigue costs a Super Bowl team, sixteen years of openers cannot find it.

Two. Do not read the winners' record as a quality signal. Fifteen of sixteen of those games were at home because the league schedules them that way. It is a home field number wearing a champion's jersey.

Three. The role matters less than the venue. Losers at home are +4.29 a game. Losers on the road are -1.44. That is a swing of nearly six points, which is larger than the difference between winners and losers overall.

Four. Buy the key numbers here before you buy them anywhere. If more than two thirds of these games land inside a score, and 3 and 7 are where the margins pile up, the half point across 3 is worth more in a week 1 Super Bowl rematch than the generic price would suggest.

Five. Nine games is nine games. The road losers bucket is the most quotable line on this page and the least reliable. Use it as a tiebreaker on a number you already think is close to fair, never as the reason for a position.

Method: Super Bowls following the 2009 through 2024 regular seasons, thirty two participants. Each team's first regular season game of the following year, from the ESPN scoreboard, with final scores and venue. Covers are computed against a flat +3.5 for illustration, not against the closing line each game actually carried, so the cover column answers "how often did the margin beat 3.5" rather than "how often would this bet have won." Straight up records, margins and venue are exact.
