A Home Team Scores 3 Or Fewer In 43.2 Percent Of 2026 Games, Short Of What -130 Needs

Bar chart of 2026 rates for scoring 3 runs or fewer. All home teams 43.2 percent, all road teams 46.3, Fenway home 44.0, Yankee Stadium home 46.7, Citizens Bank home 34.7, Sutter Health road 21.7. A vertical line marks 56.52 percent, the break even rate at -130.
2,344 completed 2026 regular season games with a final score. Bars are the share of games in which that team scored 3 runs or fewer. The blue line is 56.52 percent, what a -130 price needs. Chart: Sports Betting Prime, from MLB Stats API data.

One ticket on Tuesday's card is a team total, not a game total. Boston under 3.5 at -130 wins only if the Red Sox score 0, 1, 2, or 3. The price needs that to happen 56.52 percent of the time. The 2026 record, counted from final scores, does not get there.

This is the base rate. It is not a prediction for Payton Tolle against Parker Messick. It is the number the price has to beat before the matchup is allowed to matter.

How the count was built

2,344 completed 2026 regular season games, pulled from the MLB Stats API with final scores and venue names. Postponed games with no score were left out. A team total under 3.5 wins when that team scores 3 or fewer. There is no push on a half run.

The home team has scored 3 or fewer in 43.2 percent of games. The road team has done it in 46.3 percent. Neither number clears 56.52 percent. At Fenway, the home team, which is Boston, has done it in 33 of 75 games, 44.0 percent.

What that means for the 1 unit ticket

Boston under 3.5 at -130 risks 1.30 to win 1. If you bet that number on a random home team all season, the base rate says you win about 43 times in 100 and you needed about 57. The park does not rescue it. Fenway's home team rate is 44.0 percent, a point above the league and still 12.5 points under the price.

The two starters are the part the base rate cannot see. Payton Tolle is 9 and 6 with a 3.02 ERA and 166 strikeouts in 143 innings. Parker Messick is 12 and 9 with a 2.57 ERA and 186 strikeouts in 178.1 innings. From September 5 through September 20, Boston scored 3 or fewer in 7 of 14 games, which is 50 percent, still short of 56.52. The ticket is a bet that these two arms beat a base rate that has been losing at this price all year.

The same count, on the other games

Yankee Stadium's home team has scored 3 or fewer in 35 of 75 games, 46.7 percent. Visitors there have done it in 38 of 75, 50.7 percent. That is Game 2's building, where the card is a game total under 6.5, not a team total. Citizens Bank Park's home team, the Phillies, has scored 3 or fewer in only 26 of 75 games, 34.7 percent. Milwaukee's road offense is the other half of that under 7.5. At Sutter Health Park the visiting team has scored 3 or fewer in 15 of 69 games, 21.7 percent. The Angels are the visitor there, on a moneyline, not a total.

A team total under 3.5 at -130 is a price the 2026 scoreboard has not justified on its own. The 1 unit on Boston is the matchup, not the base rate.
