An undrafted rookie dove over the goal line from five yards out with nothing left on the clock, and the quarterback who had just posted a 125.4 passer rating stood on the other sideline and watched. Carolina 33, Arizona 30, Thursday night in Canton, in a game that counts for nothing.

Sixteen more of these land Thursday through Saturday. Anyone pricing them off what Thursday's box score said is about to learn the same lesson twice.

Beck completed 79 percent of his throws. King completed 62 percent for eight fewer yards on fifteen more attempts. By every passing metric that ends up in a preseason recap, Beck had the better night by a wide margin, and his coach and his receivers said so afterward. The total is the interesting one. Thirty-three and a half, and the teams combined for 63.

A preseason total is not really a projection of two offenses. It is a projection of coaching intent: how early the starters leave, how vanilla the playcalling stays, whether a coach in his first game wants to see his rookie quarterback operate a real drive or wants to run the ball and go home. Nearly doubling the number means the intent assumption was wrong on both sidelines at once, and no amount of studying returning production would have told you that.

Note the Cardinals reappear on Thursday at Las Vegas, six days after Canton. Anyone extrapolating from Beck's 125.4 rating into that game is pricing a snap count nobody has published.

Depth-chart reporting and a beat writer's Wednesday note about rotation plans are worth more than a full season of returning-production analysis.

The honest argument against that position is that books know it too. Preseason limits are lower than regular-season limits precisely because the books are also flying with less information, and a market that knows it is uncertain widens its own margins rather than handing out a free number. The information advantage that exists is real but small, expensive to act on, and capped by how much a book will take.
