Seven positions are posted on Monday's card for 11.5 units. Two of them, four of the eleven and a half units, are team totals under 3.5 rather than the game unders hanging next to them on the same screen. That is a deliberate choice and it deserves to be defended with arithmetic rather than with a sentence about run prevention.
The short version: on the Seattle side the team total is the better expression of the read by a clear margin. On the Los Angeles side, at the price actually posted, it is thin enough that the game total was arguably the better ticket. Both conclusions come out of the same method.

A game under is a bet on two lineups. A team total under is a bet on one. That sounds obvious and it is, but the consequence is not: a game under carries the variance of the opposing offense for free, and you pay for that variance in the price whether you have an opinion about it or not.
In Seattle the opposing offense is Philadelphia, which scores 4.57 runs a game and is facing Logan Gilbert at a 3.35 ERA and a 1.01 WHIP. That is a fine matchup to have an opinion about. It is not the opinion this card holds. The read is specifically that Seattle cannot score, and the game under makes you underwrite the Phillies too.
Seattle scores 3.92 runs a game with a .684 OPS and a .229 average, the lowest scoring rate of any club playing Monday. Zack Wheeler brings a 2.92 ERA, a 1.01 WHIP, 144 strikeouts in 120.1 innings, a 10.77 strikeout rate and a .202 opponent average.

Now the arithmetic. Devig the board team total: over 2.5 at -154 implies 60.63 percent, under 2.5 at +120 implies 45.45 percent, the pair sums to 106.08 percent, and normalizing puts the market's honest number on under 2.5 at 42.85 percent. That is the probability Seattle scores two runs or fewer.
The position taken is under 3.5, a full run higher. That adds the probability of Seattle scoring exactly three. With a game total of 6.5 and Seattle priced at even money against -112, the market's implied Seattle run expectation is roughly 3.1. At that expectation the mass sitting on exactly three runs is worth somewhere around 20 points of probability, which puts under 3.5 in the low to mid sixties.
The ticket is -150, which needs 60 percent. Against a low sixties estimate that is a real position, not a large one. It is the sort of edge that survives being wrong about the exact shape of the run distribution, which is the only kind worth two units.
The Angels score 4.10 runs a game with a .686 OPS. Parker Messick brings a 2.54 ERA, a 1.03 WHIP, 152 strikeouts against 40 walks and a .208 opponent average. On the surface this looks like the same picture, and the surface is misleading.

Two differences matter. The game total is a full run higher at 7.5, and the Angels are a +142 home dog rather than an even money side, which pushes the implied Los Angeles run expectation to roughly 3.4 rather than 3.1. Three tenths of a run does not sound like much. On an under 3.5, where the entire question is whether the fourth run arrives, it moves the answer several points.
At an expectation near 3.4 the probability of three or fewer lands in the mid to high fifties. The posted price is -140, which needs 58.3 percent. The board price at the same moment was -130, needing 56.5. The gap between those two numbers is roughly the entire edge.
The run expectations above are backed out of the market, not modelled from lineups. Nothing here uses batter versus pitcher data, park factors, bullpen rest, or the actual nine names posted. If Seattle's implied total is really 2.9 rather than 3.1, the first play is better than described. If the Angels sit closer to 3.2 than 3.4, the second one is fine.
The distribution assumption matters too. Baseball run scoring is more dispersed than a Poisson process, which pushes probability out to both tails. On an under 3.5 that cuts slightly against the ticket in high variance environments and slightly for it against a strikeout arm who suppresses the sequencing that produces four run innings. Wheeler at 10.77 strikeouts per nine is exactly that arm. Messick at 9.18 is close to it.
Team totals are the right instrument when the opinion is about one dugout, and both of these opinions are. The instrument is not free: it costs 40 to 50 cents of juice against a game under sitting at roughly even money. In Seattle the isolation clearly pays for itself. In Anaheim, at -140 rather than the -130 on the board, it is a coin flip whether it does.

What is not checked, and cannot be:
- No model ran for either position. Nothing on this page is a model projection, and none was used to select or size anything.
- The run expectations of 3.1 and 3.4 are backed out of the posted game totals and moneylines by hand. They are not lineup based projections and no park factor was applied to either.
- The probability estimates for under 3.5 are described as ranges on purpose. No run distribution was fitted. A Poisson reference point was used as a sanity check and baseball is known to be more dispersed than Poisson.
- Only one book is quoted. Every price here is a single board snapshot taken Monday afternoon, or the entry price on a posted position. No claim is made about where any number opened or where it moved.
- No ticket count or money percentage split was pulled. Sports Betting Prime stopped publishing consensus data on July 21, 2026 and has not resumed it.
- Lineups had not posted when this was written. Late scratches, rest days, bullpen availability and weather all postdate this page.
- No batter versus pitcher data was used anywhere, and the sample sizes involved would not support it if it had been.
- Bullpen usage and rest were not pulled for any of the four clubs, despite late innings being exactly where a team total under is decided.
